How world champ Alex Eala maintains a winning mindset in life

By John Patrick Magno Ranara Published Apr 20, 2023 1:09 pm

Strongly powered by their desire for adventure and positive change, Gen Zs are known for owning the world by being values-driven, educated, tech-savvy, and globally aware. Keeping today’s generation in mind, Globe has launched a new Gen G movement to inspire them to be “G” to chase their dreams, “G” to deepen their passion, and “G” to own their world.

Who better to inspire them to do just that than world champ Alex Eala?

The Rafael Nadal Academy scholar made the Philippines proud not once, but three times—when she won the 2020 Australian Open Juniors doubles tourney with Indonesian partner Priska Nugroho, when she took home the 2021 French Open girls doubles champions with Russian partner Oksana Selekhmeteva, and when she became the country’s first Grand Slam junior champion at the 2022 US Open.

Alex has served as an inspiration to her fellow Gen Zs for championing passion into purpose, not just as a tennis star but also as a regular teen. Through the Gen G drive, Globe and Alex aim to help them come out on top on their own terms and spur them to be pragmatic dreamers and passionate go-getters.

The teenager understands that there are equal chances for wins and losses on the court, but at the end of the day, it’s all about not letting setbacks define who she is. “I’ve had some wins, yes. But of course, with any game, there’s always a chance of losing—and that’s okay,” she said.

It’s a thinking that goes beyond her chosen sport. Like everyone else, there are times when Alex feels like she’s been knocked down in life, but she manages to keep the fire in her, thanks to her stress relievers.

Aside from putting on a game face amidst adversity, having a winning mindset also requires knowing how to unwind, recharge, and push the reset button when needed. Among the things that put her mind at ease are relaxing at home, immersing herself in her favorite TV shows, and jamming to pop music from artists like SZA and Drake. By being in a relaxed mental state, she’s able to be more resilient and open to opportunities that would bring out the best version of herself in whatever way she defines it.

“I think with series, I can watch episode by episode while I multitask with other things,” Alex said. When choosing between romantic comedies or horror, she shared that she is leaning more toward the former. “Horror, I can only do kung may kasama ako. I don’t usually do it without my family and friends.”

The phrase “food is fuel” also holds a special meaning for hardworking teens like Alex. But while she usually powers herself up by eating healthy food, she also satisfies her sweet tooth from time to time for some balance and fun—obsessing over Filipino desserts such as puto bumbong, pichi-pichi, and halo-halo. She also loves sinigang.

“When I’m home, I eat so much rice and everything. It’s good in moderation. I like ice cream—rice, ice cream, or milk tea. I love milk tea din,” she said.

Another thing that keeps her mind at ease is dressing up. “I tend to favor comfort, but I still like to look ‘put together,’” she shared.

Of course, she also has an incredible support system composed of her nearest and dearest, who help her get through stormy times. “I like to be with my friends, my brother, and my family. I’m really close to my brother. When I have a problem or I’m worried about something, I go to him,” she opened up, adding that her tennis family is also there for her when she needs them.

On top of these, Alex also makes use of tools that move her toward her passion, including Globe products that offer skill-building content and ways to keep her close to her support system.

There’s Globe’s wide variety of streaming video and music partners, where they boast an ultimate entertainment subscriptions list that includes Spotify, SoundCloud, Crunchyroll, HBO Go, iWantTFC, Netflix, Viu, and more.

When she wants to broaden her horizons even further, Alex turns to the telecommunications company’s tools such as their budget-friendly connectivity plans that help her have reliable internet and communication services that keep her connected at all times.

The tennis champ continues to be a source of inspiration for today’s generation of determined individuals that don’t give up easily. With a good mix of a winning mindset, support system, and helpful tools, Alex is more than happy to lead them in turning their dreams into a reality.
