Pinay in STEM? Pursue your master's degree in the UK with this scholarship program

It's no secret that women are still outnumbered in traditionally male-dominated jobs like technology and engineering. But that doesn't mean to say there's a shortage in talented females seeking STEM careers. Luckily, scholarships and other financial assistance are being offered to women to help bridge this gap.

The British Council has announced that it is offering higher education scholarships for Filipinas with a background in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM).

The council's Women in STEM program targets women who wish to pursue their master's degrees in STEM-related areas in the United Kingdom. Under the scholarship scheme, beneficiaries will have their tuition fees, monthly stipend, travel costs, visa, and health coverage fees provided.

Now in its third year of operation, the scholarship grant is in partnership with over 21 UK-based universities to support over 100 women from countries—including the Philippines—in the Americas, South Asia, and East Asia. Over 100 scholarships will be offered for courses starting in Autumn 2023.

Filipinos are particularly eligible for master’s scholarships and early academic fellowships for Middlesex University, the University of Strathclyde, and Newcastle University.

Applications are open from March to May this year, with varying deadlines based on the partner university.

There is no age limit for eligibility. In fact, the program provides special support to women with dependents, as well as scholars who might need a short pre-sessional English course to achieve the required language level.

Best of all, you can apply to more than one university. The British Council clarified: "If you are recommended for a scholarship at more than one university, the review panel will make the final decision on your allocation."

“The British Council has always been committed to supporting efforts to improve the quality of education worldwide. We are excited to offer opportunities like the Women in STEM scholarship to Filipinas, whom we know are extremely talented and can benefit greatly through this
program,” Philippines country director Lotus Postrado said.
