According to the World Health Organization, PCOS is a hormonal disorder that affects about 10 to 13% of women globally, but up to 70% of women displaying symptoms remain undiagnosed. These symptoms include absent, intermittent, or heavy and long periods, difficulty conceiving, excessive facial or body hair, thinning hair, acne, and cysts in the ovaries.
Women with PCOS, which has a strong genetic component, are at higher risk for type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, weight gain or obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, and sleep apnea.
A study on PCOS published on the National Library of Medicine recommends women who have been previously diagnosed with PCOS undergo rescreening every one to three years, depending on the severity of the symptoms. Otherwise, a screening every three to five years is ideal.
Per Mayo Clinic, women should see an OB-GYN for questions or concerns about the female reproductive system.
