Filipino students may apply for Singapore's ASEAN scholarship until Feb. 21. Here are the requirements
Singapore is now accepting applications from Filipinos students for its ASEAN scholarship.
On its website, Singapore's Ministry of Education (MOE) said the scholarship is valid for four years from Secondary 3 to Pre-University 2, leading to the Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education A-Level or similar qualification.
The scholarship will be renewed each year based on the student's performance in school.
The package includes an annual allowance with hostel accommodation, a settling-in allowance, return economy airfare, school fees, examination fees for GCE O-Level and A-Level (once only, as applicable), and subsidized medical benefits and insurance cover for accidents.
Filipino applicants must be born between Jan. 2, 2009, and Jan. 1, 2012. In other words, they must be aged 13 to 16, and also in Grade 9 or above.
They must be proficient in English and have done consistently well in school examinations.
Aside from academics, applicants must also have a good record of participation in co-curricular activities.
How to apply
Applications should be done online through the MOE website, which requires them to log into their registered accounts. The agency noted that there's no application fee required.
Applications run from Jan. 6 to Feb. 21. By March, shortlisted candidates will be informed at least a week in advance to attend selection tests.
The tests may be held in Cebu and Manila if there are enough shortlisted candidates. According to the MOE's frequently asked questions page, details of the tests, which cover English and Mathematics, will be emailed to the applicants.
By April, shortlisted candidates will be informed at least a week before a selection interview in Cebu and Manila.
Successful applicants will be notified via email in May. They're expected to arrive in November, or after six months.
Singaporean Ambassador to the Philippines Constance See told the state-run Philippine News Agency that the MOE awarded 15 and 22 scholars in 2023 and 2024, respectively.
“They came from all across the Philippines - Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao," See said. "We hope to receive applications from bright and deserving Filipino students."
On its website, the MOE also said that through the scholarship, students "will have opportunities to broaden their horizons and develop important skills such as leadership, communication and other life skills."
"They can also help to promote goodwill and understanding among young people from different countries and Singapore," it added.
