Chloé Zhao makes history as the first woman of color to bag ‘Best Director’ Oscar

Chloé Zhao has just made history at the 93^rd Academy Awards!

Not only did she become the first woman of color to score the Best Director award—but she's also the first female to get nominated in four categories (namely Best Film Editing, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture) in just one year. 

“This is for anyone who has the faith and the courage to hold on to the goodness in themselves, and to hold on to the goodness in each other, no matter how difficult it is to do that,” she said in her acceptance speech. 

Apart from Nomadland (2020), the Chinese filmmaker has worked her brilliance in feature films like Songs My Brothers Taught Me in 2015 and The Rider in 2017.  She also directed Marvel Studios’ The Eternals, which is slated for release in November. 

Zhao, who was raised in Beijing, China, pursued a Graduate Film program at the New York University. 

The 2021 Oscars ceremony was held on Sunday, April 25 in Los Angeles, California.
