Swedish couple raises over P837.4 million to never hear 'Last Christmas' ever again
How far would you go to never hear a song you hate ever again? For this couple, they're willing to buy the rights to the song and erase it from music charts.
Couple Tomas Mazetti and wife Hannah have raised over £50,000 (P3.36 million) online to purchase the song rights of Last Christmas by Wham! so they would never have to listen to it again.
Speaking to Daily Mail, Hannah explained that she started hating the song 12 years ago when her boss played the song on repeat in the café where she worked in Oxford.
“He was only in now and then, so he didn't fully appreciate the agony the rest of the staff felt when Last Christmas played for the 111th time of the working day,” she explained.
Looking back, she said her friends had the same opinion and gave them the idea of buying the rights.
"Someone told us it was theoretically possible to buy the rights to the song and then take it of all streaming platforms!"
However, the rights to the song is not cheap as they are currently owned by Warner Chappell Music UK and are valued at between $15 million (P837.4 million) and $25 million (P1.395 billion).
Their goal is to raise $15 million (P837.4 million) to be able to negotiate with the record company. If the couple achieves it, they shared that they intend to dump the master recording in a Finnish nuclear waste site "where it'll rest for at least two million years."
They did note though that they have nothing against the singers, Wham!, but they feel that they needed to do something for people who "suffer like us."
"It is because it is being played 5,000 times per day, but we felt something had to be done to support the people that suffer like us."
As of writing, over 327 people have pledged £51,547 (P3.36 million).
