Apple Music to label AI-generated songs later this year

Apple Music is set to introduce labels for music created with artificial intelligence later this year.

According to reports from international outlets, including Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, the music streaming platform said in a note that it plans to introduce a “Made With AI” label for music created using artificial intelligence.

The move follows Apple Music’s introduction of AI Transparency Tags in March, a system designed to indicate whether a track was created using AI.

“As we implement Made With AI Labels, content providers will be important partners,” Apple Music said. “They are best positioned to know how their content was created, and the AI Transparency Tags that should be used.”

Under the new policy, content providers will be required to add an AI Transparency Tag whenever AI was used to create a significant portion of a track, including music generated entirely through AI platforms.

“We define AI-platform-generated content as anything that is primarily derived from a generative AI service," Apple Music said.

Apple Music Vice President Oliver Schusser previously told Billboard that “more than a third” of tracks uploaded to the platform were “100% AI.” He explained that Apple Music has its own detection tools to identify AI-generated songs and determine how AI was used and which models were involved. However, the company ultimately expects uploaders to “take responsibility” for disclosing AI use.

The music streaming platform has yet to announce when the label will appear on the app.

Meanwhile, Spotify has also taken steps to address AI-generated music. In August, the streaming giant announced plans to launch "AI Persona" to label AI artists and exclude them from algorithmic recommendations as part of a broader effort to combat fake performers. The feature will roll out in mid-September.
