Woman found to be living inside supermarket sign for over a year
A woman was discovered to be living inside a grocery store sign for over a year—complete with a mini desk, computer, printer, coffee maker, and even a houseplant.
According to a report by ABC News, contractors were fixing an extension cord on the roof of Family Fare Supermarket in Michigan when they found the 34-year-old woman on April 23.
“She was homeless,” Officer Brennon Warren of the Midland Police Department said. “It’s a story that makes you scratch your head, just somebody living up in a sign.”
She lived in the triangle-shaped sign at the top of the building, which she accessed through a small door, for over a year.
"People would see her from time to time and then all of a sudden she would vanish," explained Warren. "No one really knew where she went but no one ever indicated or thought that she would be up on top of the roof."
ABC News reported that a spokesperson for Family Fare's parent company SpartanNash said their employees responded "with the utmost compassion and professionalism."
"Ensuring there is ample safe, affordable housing continues to be a widespread issue nationwide that our community needs to partner in solving," the spokesperson continued.
Authorities said the woman agreed to vacate the area when she was discovered there, so no charges were filed against her.
"We provided her with some information about services in the area. She apologized and continued on her way. Where she went from there, I don't know," Warren shared.
