TRENDING: Man gets trapped under his dead father's casket during funeral
A man got trapped under his dead father's coffin after a platform collapsed, making him and other pallbearers fall into an open grave while the deceased was being laid to rest.
In a video shared by multiple outlets like CNN and ABC News, around eight people—including the deceased's son—are seen carrying the casket of Benjamin Aviles, who died in his North Philadelphia home due to heart problems, at Greenmount Cemetery. As they tried to lower it onto the platform, it suddenly collapsed and made them plunge into the burial site.
Aviles' stepdaughter Maribelle Rodriguez recalled what happened in an interview with ABC6, calling it a "horrible incident" that took place "at a bad moment."
Pallbearers were left with injuries on their legs, hands, and back, while Aviles' son got stuck under the coffin.
"The casket lay on top of him, and he was out like a light with his face in the mud," said Rodriguez.
Rodriguez put the blame on poor burial conditions, noting that "the wood was wobbly, all wet and soaked."
She demanded an apology and reimbursement from the cemetery and funeral home after the incident. "I think they should apologize," she said. "There should be some reimbursement, being that the ceremony was interrupted; nothing was done properly."
Joel Winston, the president and owner of Greenmount Cemetery, told CNN International that it was the first time that such an incident happened there and that he felt terrible about it. "My heart goes out to them—it was an accident," he's quoted as saying.
