HR manager creates 22 fake employees, collects their salaries for years
A human resources manager created 22 fake employees and collected their salaries, including severance pay, amounting to 16 million yuan (PhP 126.6 million)
The South China Morning Post, citing Ningbo Evening News, reported that the man from China, surnamed Yang, worked at a labor services company in Shanghai. He was responsible for managing the payroll of people sent to work at a tech company.
Yang found he was the only one who had authority on employee placement. His company also has no review process for salary payments.
He made a record for "Sun" and applied for salary payments on Sun's behalf. He transferred Sun's salary to a bank card he owns, but not under his name.
When the labor services company flagged Sun's supposed salary not getting credited to his account, Yang said the tech company had delayed payment.
Yang did the scam since 2014, though the individual salaries of the other ghost employees weren't disclosed.
The devil was also in the details. In 2022, the tech company's finance department noticed that Sun had perfect attendance and received his pay on time despite nobody ever seeing him in the office.
The issue was then reported to authorities and everything unraveled upon investigation of attendance records and bank transactions.
Yang was sentenced to 10 years and two months in prison for embezzlement.
He also wasn't allowed to vote or run for public office for a year.
He was slapped with a fine and was ordered to return 1.1 million yuan (PhP8.7 million) in stolen funds. His family was asked to give back another 1.2 million yuan (PhP9.4 million).
