More details have been disclosed about Eric Dane's death.

According to his death certificate obtained by international outlets, including PEOPLE Magazine and Fox News Digital, Dane's official cause of death was confirmed as respiratory failure. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) was listed as the underlying cause.

Dane, better known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan or McSteamy on Grey's Anatomy, passed away on Feb. 19. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two children, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13.

"He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world," their statement read.

"Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received," it added.

His death came nearly a year after he announced his ALS diagnosis in April. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also called Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a condition that progressively damages nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It is considered one of the most severe disorders affecting nerve and muscle function.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association reports that while many patients live only three to five years after diagnosis, some individuals survive for 10 years or more.

After his diagnosis, Dane dedicated his life to advocating for awareness of the disease.

In June, Dane shared that he had lost the function of his right arm amid his health battle.

Aside from Grey's Anatomy, Dane also starred in multiple television shows, including Euphoria, Charmed, and the action drama series The Last Ship. His movie projects include Marley & Me, Valentine's Day, and Burlesque.
