'Grey's Anatomy' star Eric Dane dies at 53
Eric Dane, who became famous for portraying the role of Dr. Mark Sloan or "McSteamy" on Grey's Anatomy, has died. He was 53.
The actor's family confirmed his death to PEOPLE Magazine.
"With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS," their statement read. "He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world."
"Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time."
Dane announced his ALS diagnosis in April. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, causes progressive degeneration of nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain. It's one of the most devastating types of disorders that affect nerve and muscle function. Most ALS patients die within three to five years, per the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Some patients can live for longer, even over a decade or two.
In June, Dane shared that he had lost function of his right arm amid his health battle.
Aside from Grey's Anatomy, Dane appeared in multiple television shows, including Charmed. He also starred in the teen drama series Euphoria and the action drama series The Last Ship. His movie projects include Marley & Me, Valentine's Day, and Burlesque.
