Secret stash: Family finds 1 million pennies while cleaning their old home

A family in Los Angeles found one million pennies while cleaning their old home, estimated to be around $10,000—or over P500,000—in cold hard copper. 

According to a report by US news outlet KTLA, John Reyes and his wife found a huge amount of pennies in various containers like crates and bank bags while they were decluttering their late father’s house. 

While it could be considered a “lucky find” for some, the pair had a hard time getting rid of them and turning them into cash as banks either turned them down or asked for an additional fee. John recalled being told by a bank manager “not to bring them here” as they didn’t have enough room for the pennies that the couple chanced upon.

KTLA reported that since it’s a rare collection, the couple instead agreed to sell it for $25,000 (P1.4 million) on the marketplace OfferUp. No one has shown interest in getting it as of this writing.

The price tag is “more expensive than any other copper US coin collection currently available on eBay,” according to KTLA, adding that the one with the highest cost at the moment is $20,000 (P1.1 million) for a good variety of pennies.
