UP Diliman holds week-long event addressing Martial Law lies and revisionism
The University of the Philippines is staging a five-day online event in time for this week's 49th anniversary of the Martial Law proclamation that aims to combat the growing lies and misinformation about the era.
Held from Sept. 20 - 24, the event is dubbed “Dambana ng Gunita: Mga Batayang Katotohanan at Aral ng Batas Militar” and is said to “go in depth on the specific issues that often fall prey to misinformation.”
The webinars will be spearheaded by scholars of history and the social sciences from UP and other universities here and abroad along with human rights activists.
These issues include “Marcos’s alleged heroism; the supposed peaceful society during the Martial Law years; the truth with regard to human rights violations under the Marcos regime; the myth of an economic golden age under the Marcoses; and, the rampant corruption and cronyism of the Marcos administration that set our country back decades.”
UP President Danilo Concepcion opened the webinar Sept. 20 by noting how technology has helped fuel lies about Martial Law.
“Naging mas mabilis ang daluyan ng impormasyon sa panahon ng social media at kasabay nito ang paglaganap din ng disimpormasyon. Nagkaroon ng pagkakataon ang ilan na baluktutin ang katotohanan,” said Concepcion.
