James B. Jimenez, who previously served as the spokesperson of the Commission on Elections, has passed away. He was 52.

The poll body announced his passing on Wednesday, Jan. 28.

"The Commission on Elections mourns the passing of James B. Jimenez, former Spokesperson and Director IV, Education and Information Department of the Commission, who served the institution and the Filipino people with integrity, clarity, and utmost dedication," the Comelec wrote.

It went on to reflect on Jimenez's contribution to the government, serving as the spokesperson for 16 years.

"Jimenez holds the rare distinction of being the longest-serving and youngest spokesperson in government at the time of his appointment," Comelec said. "He was the public face and steady voice of the Commission—explaining complex electoral processes with precision, defending democratic institutions with calm courage, and engaging citizens and media with respect, wit, and transparency," it added.

He was remembered as someone who "stood at the frontlines of public information during moments of intense scrutiny and national consequence," by leading public information efforts to connect with the public.

"He championed accuracy, transparency, and accessibility, often translating legal and technical matters into language the public could understand. In doing so, he strengthened public trust in the electoral process and modeled how principled communication can serve democracy," the poll body continued.

Comelec also remembered him as a trusted colleague, being known for his sharp mind, warmth, and humor.

"COMELEC extends its deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and loved ones. We honor his legacy of public service and his enduring contribution to election transparency and voter education. His voice, professionalism, and quiet courage will be remembered," it concluded.

The cause of his death was not disclosed.

Jimenez was an alumnus of the University of Santo Tomas. He first joined the Comelec in 2002 as a consultant before serving as Director IV in 2004. He was appointed as a spokesperson and served from July 2006 until his retirement in September 2022.

During his tenure, he faced controversy when the last two Comelec-sponsored 2022 presidential and vice-presidential debates were canceled after Impact Hub Manila, the event partner, failed to pay P14 million of the P20.5-million fee to the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila, the planned venue.

Due to the controversy, he was relieved from his duties a few days before the national polls.
