Four universities have landed on Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings in Asia for 2024 for the first time, increasing the number of Philippine universities on the list to 16.

According to the latest university ranking released on Wednesday, Nov. 8, first-timers Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) and University of San Carlos (USC) landed on the 551-600 bracket, Far Eastern University - Manila (FEU) on 701-750, and Mindanao State University (MSU) ranked 801+.

Placed alongside other Philippine universities on the list, USC landed on the 6th spot, followed by PUP on the 7th spot, FEU ranked 11, and MSU on the 16th. Meanwhile, the University of the Philippines (UP) remained the top Philippine school.

This year’s list gathered 856 universities from Asia. Topping the list is China’s Peking University, followed by The University of Hong Kong and the National University of Singapore.

Since 2009, QS has been highlighting universities that stood out the most through their academic reputation (30%), employer reputation (20%), faculty-to-student ratio (10%), and international research network (10%).

They take into account the universities’ citations per paper (10%) and papers per faculty (5%). They also consider how many staff have a PhD (5%), the proportion of international faculty and students (2.5% each), and the proportion of inbound and outbound exchange students (2.5% each).

When it comes to global ranking, Massachusetts Institute of Technology topped the list released last June. It is followed by the University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Harvard University, Stanford University, and Imperial College London, among others.
