LTO issues subpoena against SUV, bus drivers involved in Cavite road rage incident

The Land Transportation Office has issued a show cause order and subpoena against the drivers of an SUV and a public utility bus involved in a recent viral road rage incident in Cavite.

A video that circulated on social media showed a Ford Everest blocking a bus bound for Lian, Batangas, in the middle of a public road. The SUV driver alighted from his vehicle and, shouting, demanded the bus driver surrender his license. While the SUV's female passenger tried to pacify the driver, he shouted profanity at the bus driver while breaking the bus' windshield wiper.

According to the LTO database, revealed through a statement released Tuesday, Jan. 6, the SUV was last registered on July 7, 2024.

LTO chief, assistant secretary Markus V. Lacanilao summoned the SUV driver and its registered owner to the LTO-Intelligence and Investigation Division in Quezon City at 10 a.m. on Jan. 14. At the hearing, the SUV driver is expected to explain why he should not be administratively charged with reckless driving and why his license should not be suspended or revoked for being an "improper person to operate a motor vehicle."

In the meantime, the driver's license has been placed under a 90-day preventive suspension. He is ordered to surrender his license before his scheduled hearing.

For the duration of the investigation, the LTO has placed the Ford Everest "under alarm," prohibiting any kind of transaction involving the SUV. Its owner has also been charged with violating the compulsory registration of a motor vehicle.

The driver and registered owner of the bus have also been issued a subpoena and were ordered to appear at the LTO headquarters on Jan. 14. They are to give their own explanations of the incident, and bring along their driver's license as well as the bus documents.

Failure to attend the hearing or submit the required verified documents will mean waiving the individuals' right to be heard, in which case, the charges will be decided based on the evidence at hand.
