Carlos Yulo wins Philippines' first gold at 2026 Asian Games
Carlos Yulo has finally added an Asian Games gold medal to his impressive collection of titles.
The two-time Olympic champion ruled the men’s floor exercise final at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan on Sept. 24 after scoring 14.666 to claim the Philippines’ first gold medal of the games.
Yulo posted an 8.966 execution score with a 5.700 difficulty rating.
Kazakhstan’s Milad Karimi meanwhile took the silver medal with 14.600 points on a 5.7 difficulty, while Japan’s Shoma Tsukiyama settled for bronze after scoring 14.566 points on a 5.6 difficulty.
In an interview with One Sports, Yulo said that he is "really happy" and "overwhelmed" by his victory.
"Ang daming mga challenges papunta dito and competing here. But yeah, God is good, really good. Hindi niya tayo pinabayaan," he said.
"I'm just really happy na ganun po 'yung nangyari. Binigay ko 'yung best ko and ayun 'yung kinalabasan ngayon. I'm just really grateful to God. Really po. Akala ko, pwedeng mag-second ako, pwedeng mag-third poako sa unang dalawang nag-compete po eh. So, para sa akin, nagpe-pray na lang po ako kanina," he added.
With his victory, Yulo adds another gold to his resume that already includes two Olympic gold medals, three World Championships titles, 11 Asian Championships gold medals, and nine Southeast Asian Games gold medals.
Also in the competition are reigning Asian Games pole vault champion EJ Obiena and Yulo's younger brother, Eldrew, in gymnastics.
The combat sports group features Olympic boxing medalists Nesthy Petecio, Eumir Marcial, and Carlo Paalam, while Asian champion Vanessa Sarno and delegation flagbearer Albert Ian delos Santos headline the weightlifting roster.
Tennis sensation Alex Eala is also aiming for top honors in women's singles and mixed doubles, joining other individual contenders including street skateboarder Margielyn Didal, Olympic relay swimmer Kayla Sanchez, and wushu champion Agatha Wong.
Rounding out the contingent are key team events, starring defending champions Gilas Pilipinas in 5x5 men's basketball alongside major national pushes from Alas Pilipinas in volleyball, the Filipinas in football, and esports powerhouse Sibol.
