Man does 26,100 squats in 24 hours for world record
A man from Illinois did thousands of squats in one day to smash a world record and raise money for charity.
Local media outlet WCIA News reported that Tony Piraino of Decatur City began his attempt at 5:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 5 at KRRAK CrossFit/Raising the Bar Fitness Center. He completed his feat at 5:00 a.m. the following day, April 6, with 30-second breaks "every 22 squats and a few longer breaks throughout the day."
According to him, he was inspired by athlete David Hoggins, who broke a world record in 2013 by doing 4,030 pull-ups in 17 hours and 45 minutes. He also read Hoggins' book Can't Hurt Me, which revolves around pushing boundaries.
Piraino aimed to break the previous record of 25,000 squats held by Joe Reverdes of Rhode Island. The latter clinched it in 2020.
A video of Piraino's attempt, which you can watch here, is now under review by Guinness World Records.
He did not do it just for the world record, though. It was also to raise $10,000 that he can donate to the Marion County Horizon Center, which "provides quality housing opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities."
"The money raised will directly support their community activities, enriching their lives," he said.
