Alice Guo on allegations in viral 'Chinese spy' docu: 'Ang unfair naman po para sa akin'

Alice Guo appeared emotional as she denied being a Chinese spy anew when she was confronted about a viral documentary on a self-confessed Chinese spy, who claimed a certain Guo Hua Ping—believed to be the dismissed Bamban mayor's true identity—is in his dossier.

Guo, who usually remains composed while answering inquiries regarding her alleged involvement in the illegal operations of POGO hubs in the country, seemed triggered when she was shown the said docu about imprisoned tycoon She Zhijang in a Sept. 27 hearing conducted by the House of Representatives Quad Committee.

In the said video, Qatar-based news channel Al Jazeera interviewed detained Chinese spy Zhijang, who revealed some details about his relationship with Guo Hua Ping.

According to Zhijang, Guo had asked him for funds to help her in her campaign to be elected as mayor of Bamban, but he refused to do so as he didn’t want to "offend the government of the Philippines."

The documentary also showed a dossier on Guo Hua Ping, which contained a picture that bears similarities with the dismissed mayor as well as an address detailing that she is in Fujian Province in China.

"Guo Hua Ping, China cannot be trusted. The two of us dedicated our lives to China's Ministry of State Security. Look at what happened to me. If you don't want to be eliminated, tell the world the truth," Zhijang said.

When asked by Davao Oriental Rep. Cheeno Miguel Almario if she knew Zhijang, Guo denied this as she appeared to get upset. At one point, Guo shook her head when Almario pointed out that the address in the documentary was near the office of the Chinese Communist Party.

"Your Honor, ‘yung She Zhijang na sinasabi niyo po, ‘yun ba ‘yung pinakita niyo po kanina sa akin sa picture? Hindi ko po siya kilala at sana po, your Honor, Mr. Chair, makuha ko rin po ‘yong details gusto ko pong magdemanda," Guo said.

As Almario explained that they cannot sue him as he has already been put behind bars in Thailand, Guo persisted in defending herself and stressed that she never asked for anyone's help in funding her candidacy.

"Your Honor, unfair naman po para sa akin, hindi ko po siya kilala at never po akong humingi ng campaign funds entirely. Never po ako humingi ng campaign fund during my campaign period," Guo said.

"'Yung video na pinakita ni Congressman Cheeno kanina, hindi ko po siya kilala at gusto ko rin po iparating sa lahat ng mga kababayan ko at buong Pilipinas na rin po, mahal ko po ang Pilipinas," she added.

Almario earlier noted that the documentary was made based on investigations from a separate entity, but there are still coincidences with Guo's case.

"Even if we have been making our own researches, pulling up our own inquiries, this is another source from a completely different party, and is unrelated to what we do," he said.

"Pero nagkataon that the person named She Zhijang trusted with encrypted files showed to Al Jazeera that there is a dossier confirming that there are Chinese spies all over. Here also in the Philippines, and undoubtedly shows Guo Hua Ping," he continued.

'Mahal ko po ang Pilipinas'

Later on, PBA party-list Rep. Margarita Nograles questioned Guo on her intention to file a case against Zhijang since she claimed that she did not know his identity.

"Your Honor, I think it’s better for you to ask him kasi siya po ‘yong naglabas ng video so siya po ang nakaka-alam kung ano ang makakapag-benefit sa kanya, definitely hindi po ako spy," Guo answered.

Seemingly noticing her agitated manner of speaking, Nograles said, "Okay, relax ka lang. Bakit ka galit?"

"Kasi po ganito rin ‘yung nangyari last time, sinasabi po nila spy ako. Mahal ko po ang Pilipinas, Filipino po ako, hindi po ako spy," Guo emphasized.

Nograles urged her to "relax" as she didn't have to be "so riled up if you know the truth." Nevertheless, Guo expressed her intention to file a case against Zhijang.

Zhijang had been a fugitive in China until he was finally captured by Thai police in August 2022. He is known as the chairman of Yatai International Holdings Group, which has gambling investments in countries such as Cambodia, Myanmar, and the Philippines.

The operations, however, have been linked with human trafficking, extortion, and cyber scams.

The months-long Senate investigation into illegal POGO hubs in the Philippines is set to continue.

Guo is in the middle of it all as she is allegedly linked to two POGOs in Bamban: Hongsheng Gaming Technology Incorporated, which was raided in February 2023, and Zun Yuan Technology Incorporated, which was raided in March this year. These were likewise accused of trafficking and scams.
