What rewards await boxers Nesthy Petecio, Aira Villegas as Paris 2024 bronze medalists?

Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas each won bronze medals in the women's 57kg and 50kg boxing categories, respectively, at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

In the semifinals, Petecio lost to Poland's Julia Szeremeta, and Villegas, who debuted at the Olympics this year, fell short against Turkey's Buse Naz Cakiroglu.

With the two boxers' efforts, the Philippines had four Olympic medals for this year's games.

The other two medals were from gymnast Carlos Yulo, who took home the historic double gold in the men's vault and men's floor exercise finals.

Yulo's feat earned him several cash and in-kind rewards from the government and private companies, including cash incentives, a condo worth P32 million, franchises, colonoscopies and gastroenterology consultations, and more.

Would Petecio and Villegas likewise get rewards for their Olympic podium finish?

Yes, at least P2 million each.

It is in accordance with Republic Act No. 10699, or the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act, which states that individual Filipino Olympic medalists shall receive P10 million for each gold medal, P5 million for silver, and P2 million for bronze. (Gold medalists will also receive an Olympic Gold Medal of Valor from the Philippine Sports Commission.)

Their coaches and trainers will also get 50 percent of what they will receive.

Aside from that, Petecio and Villegas will receive a medalist plush toy, and the official Olympics Poster designed by Ugo Gattoni.

Philippine Airlines on Aug. 7 welcomed Villegas to the Olympic medalists club with 80,000 Mabuhay Miles annually for the next three years. As of writing, the airline company has yet to announce Petecio's reward.

PAL previously said that it has expanded its commitment to the Philippine Sports Commission, offering Mabuhay Miles to those who will bring home a medal from the Olympics and Paralympics.

On another note, the Philippine Olympic Committee gave a house and lot to Filipino medalists at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. It's unclear whether the organization will do it again.
