Looking for somewhere new to spend the long weekend? With revenge travel back in full swing, many Filipinos would love to spend the rest of the ber months outside the country to places like New Zealand and Japan.

But why travel far and spend so much when you can enjoy similarly beautiful natural views near Manila?

Lake Mapanuepe in Barangay Aglao, San Marcelino Municipality of Zambales is one of the newest attractions drawing nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. With its natural landscape, pastures, and relaxing freshwater lake, the spot is rising in popularity among travelers who can't help but compare the wonder with the picturesque lakeside spots in other countries.

Lake Mapanuepe is a freshwater lake that was originally formed in the aftermath of Mt. Pinatubo's explosion in 1991. The lahar destruction made the majestic Mapanuepe lake and valley come into existence and has turned it into one of the emerging tourist destinations in the province of Zambales.

Those who want to take a break from the stressful life of the city will surely enjoy this peaceful and less crowded attraction off the usual tourist radar. Although travel time may take 4-5 hours from Manila to Zambales, tourists may choose to ride a provincial bus to get there and enjoy the relaxing off-the-grid vacation.

This “beautiful disaster” is perfect for those who want an instagrammable view to enjoy with families or friends together after a busy workweek or just get away from the usual crowded spots.

Some of the activities for you to enjoy the serenity of Lake Mapanuepe include lake viewing and night camping. There are swimming restrictions in the area, but you can still ride a boat across the lake to view the historical Bojaoen church’s huge metal cross submerged during the lahar eruption.

At night, you can gather around a bonfire (under the supervision of local caretakers to prevent forest fires).  The local tourism officials have also set up public restrooms for visitors due to the increasing popularity of the place for camping and nature trips.

The tourist destination offers a low-cost getaway. If you're looking for somewhere new to go for the ber months, spending your time in a breathtaking Lake Mapanuepe will definitely be worthwhile.

Here are some travel tips to take note of:

  • Registration should be done at Aglao Barangay Hall.
  • Those who don't have their own transportation or are on a tight budget can join package tours organized by DIY groups. These joiner tours are usually open for solo travelers, couples and groups.
  • Guests may bring pets as long as they are kept on leashes.
  • Make sure to bring camp lights for overnight stays as the site has no light and signal reception is still weak.
