What is Pinduoduo? Here's what to know about the Chinese shopping app making waves
If you've come across ads for unbelievably cheap clothes, gadgets, home essentials, and other everyday items, you may have encountered Pinduoduo.
Writer-entrepreneur Wilson Lee Flores also mentioned the platform during an episode of the Generations podcast.
"The other day, I met a veteran journalist, namimili daw siya sa bagong app, Pinduoduo. Better daw than Shopee, sabi niya," he said.
The Chinese e-commerce platform has been attracting attention among Filipino shoppers with its discounted finds. Founded in 2015, the app is operated by PDD Holdings, the same multinational commerce group that owns Temu.
Like other shopping apps, it connects shoppers with third-party merchants offering a wide range of products, from household necessities and clothing to electronics and groceries.
But what makes it different from traditional online marketplaces is that it has built its business around "group buying," where shoppers can snag items for a lower price if they can team up with friends, family, or strangers on the platform to purchase the same products.

Despite some concerns surrounding the platform, Pinduoduo is a legitimate e-commerce app as it can be downloaded on the Apple App Store. However, it has yet to be made available for Android users.
Before you download the app on your phone to hunt for bargain finds, however, it's worth knowing how it works, what shoppers can expect, and the potential drawbacks to watch out for. Here's a closer look at Pinduoduo and its pros and cons:
Pros
Affordable products and discounts
One of Pinduoduo's biggest draws is its budget-friendly selection. Shoppers can browse products at prices that may be lower than those found on other online marketplaces.
According to one reviewer on the Apple App Store, almost everything sold locally in the Philippines is sold on Pindoudou, but cheaper.
"Basically, same quality for less price and it's good for minimum wage earners looking for good stuff with better prices. Shipping is free, and it's easy to check out," they said.
Wide variety of items

Pinduoduo is a one-stop shop for shoppers looking for both everyday necessities and lifestyle finds.
According to PDD Holdings, the platform carries agricultural produce, clothing, shoes, bags, baby and childcare products, food and beverages, consumer electronics, home appliances, furniture, household goods, cosmetics, personal care products, sports and fitness equipment, and even automotive accessories.
Its App Store listing also describes its selection as covering "all product categories from trusted brands."
Potential savings through group buying
The app's main selling point is its “team purchase” model, which the company says it pioneered.
Buyers are encouraged to share product information on social networks and invite their friends, family, and more to form shopping teams to enjoy the more attractive prices available under the “team purchase” option.
The more buyers who participate, the lower the price becomes.
But like all good things, there's a catch: each item has a minimum number of buyers required to complete the purchase, and if you're not able to meet that requirement within 24 hours, the group buy is cancelled. The money will then be refunded to those who have already paid.
Cons
Language barriers

One of the most common complaints from Filipino users is that much of the app remains in Chinese, even when English is selected as the preferred language.
"Please add full English language support throughout the entire app, not just in the settings. Even after selecting the Philippines as my country and English as my preferred language, most of the app is still in Chinese, making it difficult for international users to understand product descriptions, options, and other important information," one reviewer said.
"The English translation is very poor. The payment options, the item and delivery details, and a lot of other parts in the app are unreadable. It's incomplete and inconsistent," another said.
Because of this, you may need to rely on separate translation tools to understand the listings and avoid mistakes in your purchase.
Long delivery times
Since many products come from China, shoppers may have to wait several weeks for their orders to arrive.
One reviewer advised others to be patient with the delivery process as they noted that their order took around three and a half weeks to arrive.
Limited payment and return options

Pinduoduo's payment options may be a challenge for some Filipino shoppers.
Pinduoduo doesn't offer cash on delivery for Philippine orders, so buyers need to pay upfront using online payment methods. The ones that are available include GCash, Maya, Alipay, credit or debit cards, WeChat Pay, the app's own Duoduo Pay, and Huabei.
Still, there are reports of inconsistent transactions, with users noting that some merchants do not accept certain payment methods. There are also additional charges related to currency conversion.
One reviewer said, "I used my Mastercard to pay for the first time, and it said '0% gee.' But little did I know, there was a really small fine print at checkout that you can barely see saying that they charge a fee when you pay by card, even with GCash, due to the current exchange rates changing! So guess what? I got charged for it."
Returns and refunds may also be difficult to navigate, especially for international shoppers. Pinduoduo's return process is primarily designed around deliveries within China, so returning an item from the Philippines could involve additional shipping costs and logistical hurdles.
