Robert Downey Jr. graces the christening of Disney Adventure in Singapore
History is made!
Disney Cruise Line officially christened the Disney Adventure, marking its debut in Southeast Asia. Adding some power to the ceremony, Robert Downey Jr. was there to help welcome the fleet's newest crown jewel.
On March 4, a global crowd of media and creators gathered at the Walt Disney Theatre to witness the milestone. Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences, and Joe Schott, the newly-appointed President of Disney Signature Experiences, took the stage to set the scene.
“The Walt Disney Company has always been built on the power of storytelling and innovation—and Disney Cruise Line brings those values to life in extraordinary ways. Our cruise ships are ambassadors of our brand that carry joy, wonder and enchantment to destinations around the world,” said D’Amaro. “As our first ship to homeport in Asia, the Disney Adventure represents a new chapter for Disney Cruise Line and will introduce Disney to audiences who may be experiencing our magic for the very first time. It offers fans across this region an opportunity to immerse themselves in unforgettable ways and create memories that are uniquely Disney.”
The ceremony came alive when the blue curtains swept back to reveal a 23-piece orchestra, filling the theatre with the theme from Pirates of the Caribbean, while the screen behind them displayed the Disney Adventure.
In a nod to its new homeport, Mickey Mouse appeared against a vibrant digital skyline of Singapore, featuring the iconic Marina Bay Sands and the Singapore Flyer.
Later on, guests were treated to a performance by Hollywood Performing Arts Hall of Fame inductee, Filipino singer Jed Madela, who opened with We Know the Way from Moana. He was soon joined by Korean-Australian powerhouse Dami Im for a medley of hits from Tangled, Frozen, The Little Mermaid, and Big Hero 6.
Just when the crowd thought the surprises were over, Downey—the legendary Iron Man and the MCU’s new Doctor Doom—stepped onto the stage as the orchestra played the Avengers theme.
“I’ve had the privilege of getting to know the team at Walt Disney Imagineering, and I can tell you Adventure is the perfect name for what they’ve created,” the actor said.
As the Godparent of the ship, he said he has "some serious duties to perform."
Downey cued the orchestra and gave the official blessing, “I christen thee, Disney Adventure, may God bless this ship and all who sail upon her.”
A cast of beloved Disney, Pixar, and Marvel characters joined the executives and stars on stage for a rendition of Let’s Set Sail.
The Disney Adventure is Disney Cruise Line’s eighth ship and its largest to date. It embarks on its maiden voyage on March 10, followed by an inaugural season of three- and four-night itineraries at sea.
