There’s so much to admire in the City of Love.

Being both a growing metropolis and a place of rich culture and heritage, Iloilo City distinguishes itself with its charm—from the well-preserved heritage houses, accessibility to new malls, and surrounding nature that gives a breath of fresh air.

If you’re done exploring the city's food spots, here are some activities you can experience to make the most out of your visit to Iloilo.

Workshop at Arevalo Handwoven Products
Arevalo Handwoven Products.

Learn more about the beauty of Hablon weaving, specifically the iconic Sablay worn by the University of the Philippines (UP) graduates, by visiting the Arevalo Handwoven Products.

Nestled in the quiet neighborhood of Sta. Cruz St. in Arevalo, Iloilo City, visitors can learn more about how the local weavers keep the tradition alive and its tag as the “textile center” of the country since the 19th century.

According to Mrs. Evelyn Jiz, who came from the fourth generation of Hablon weavers, their family’s business was commissioned by the UP Sablay Committee in 2001 to do the Sablay prototype, using the traditional “Sinuksok” method.

Visitors can also get to try doing the traditional weaving with the guidance of the in-house weavers. For graduating iskos and iskas, you may also purchase their products here.

One way to make the most out of your Iloilo experience is by being with the locals. Buy fresh goods at La Paz Public Market and try the famous batchoy and coffee in the local restaurant, like in the Madge Cafe.

You may also visit stunning traditional mansions that are centuries old, like the Lopez Heritage House or the Nelly Garden in E. Lopez St. in Jaro. Or the Lizares Mansion which holds around 70% of its original materials, from the staircase, stained windows, railings, and tiles.

Try also joining the big bazaar in Jaro called Huebesan, where all local merchants meet every Thursday. The Jaro Market has been a major trading area of market goods since the Spanish era.

Sunset cruise in Iloilo River

Wrap up your tour with a relaxing sunset cruise around the Iloilo River. A sunset cruise ride usually lasts for three hours with a curated itinerary. You may also opt to visit Guimaras on the southeast coast of Iloilo and try their best mangoes.
