Japanese lab creates the ‘Mask Pan’—an edible face mask made out of melon bread

Whether you like it or not, face masks are now part of our everyday essentials. So, it’s no surprise that companies are putting their spin on them such as custom prints, masks with beaded chains, and ones made out of clay.

In Japan, an edible face mask made out of melon bread is being launched this month.

Created by Goku no Kimochi THE LABO, the “Mask Pan” is an edible face mask that prevents bad breath. It was developed as a response to three students from Fukuoka, Japan who are obsessed with the scent of melon bread.

The face mask was created in collaboration with Melon de Melon Bakery, a popular melon bread chain.

Since the mask is edible, it needs to be delivered through refrigerated shipping. It is considered to be safe for use a day after thawing. However, you can’t consume the outer part of the mask to avoid the risk of infection.

Reports have suggested that the “Mask Pan” is effective in protecting people against COVID-19.

Japanese mask testing organization Unitika Garmentec Research Institute confirmed the mask to be “certified to be as effective—or more effective than current masks available” based on the results of their “Splash Prevention Performance Visualization Test.”

Customers can order the “Mask Pan” at Goku no Kimochi THE LABO’s official website. The masks are sold in sets of five for ¥1,800 (about P784).

Are you up to get the “Mask Pan” as your everyday essential?
