'Warrior Nun' set to return as a film trilogy following Netflix cancellation
Warrior Nun executive producer Dean English was serious when he said that the series is making a comeback, and it's going to be "more EPIC than you could imagine."
Almost two months after the producer confirmed the show's return, English is back with more good news: Warrior Nun is set for a comeback not as a series, but as a trilogy of movies.
English announced it in a statement released on YouTube and on a website in support of saving Warrior Nun on Tuesday, Aug. 14.
"I need to start by thanking all of you loyal fans. It's because of you and your incredible energy that we keep pushing forward to makes these stories. You guys really make it all worthwhile. So thank you so much for your continued support," English said. "I am very happy to announce that Warrior Nun is coming back as a trilogy of motion pictures. Once again, a trilogy of feature films. Three."
The producer went on to confirm that fans can expect "that there's going to be a universe being launched of Warrior Nun." He said this whole new Warrior Nun-verse "could expand into films and TV series following characters that we already know." He added that other details will be revealed in the future.
English's announcement comes two months after he confirmed on Twitter that Warrior Nun is coming back after the show's second season premiered on Netflix on Nov. 10, 2022.
"Today I’m happy to officially report that because of your combined voices, passion, and amazing efforts, #WarriorNun will return and is going to be more EPIC than you could imagine. More details to come! SOON! Thank you!! #SaveWarriorNun #WarriorNunSaved," he wrote on Twitter on June 28.
The news of Warrior Nun's return comes after fans of the fantasy action series launched campaigns urging Netflix to renew the show for a third season. This includes an online petition that was signed by over 120,000 people and a billboard in front of the streaming service headquarters in Los Angeles, which read: "#SaveWarriorNun."
Netflix's Warrior Nun was created by Simon Barry inspired by the manga-style American comic book Warrior Nun Areala by Ben Dunn. The show tells the story of 19-year-old Ava Silva (Alba Baptista) while she takes down demons on Earth as the chosen Halo-Bearer of an ancient order.
Its first season premiered in July 2020 and was renewed for season 2 in August of the same year. It was ultimately canceled by Netflix in December of last year.
