LIST: Horror movies inspired by real-life events
Let the spooky weekend begin!
When a horror film gets too scary, we always remind ourselves that "it's just a movie." But what if there's actually some truth behind it as it's based on or inspired by events that happened in real life?
If you're planning to have a marathon of movies that could give you and your friends the creeps this Halloween, check out PhilSTAR L!fe's roundup of scary entertainment offerings inspired by true stories.
The Conjuring
Any horror movie list wouldn't be complete without The Conjuring, which follows paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren as they deal with one of the scariest cases they handled after a family terrorized by a dark presence in their home sought their help.
The film, which is available on Netflix, earned massive popularity and great reviews when it came out in theaters.
With its story based on actual events, Variety called this movie "a sensationally entertaining old-school freakout and one of the smartest, most viscerally effective thrillers in recent memory."
Annabelle
The cursed doll Annabelle first appeared in the first movie of The Conjuring. The story of John and Mia in the film may not be based on actual events, but the cursed doll was inspired by the Raggedy Ann Doll who is responsible for two near-death experiences that took place in the '70s.
"Anabelle invites unflattering comparisons with scary movies that came before, but its disparate parts never coalesce into a genuinely fearsome thriller," USA Today said.
The film is available on Netflix.
The Deliverance
The Deliverance landed on the top spot of Netflix's list of top films when it premiered in late August.
It's based on the story of Latoya Ammons, who experienced out-of-the-ordinary and creepy experiences that greatly affected her family when they moved to a one-story house in Gary, Indiana.
The Pope's Exorcist
The Pope's Exorcist has been available on Netflix since last year. What makes it interesting is it's based on real accounts of a Catholic priest.
The story follows Father Gabriele Amorth, chief exorcist of the Vatican, investigating a case of a young boy's possession and bringing to life centuries-old conspiracies, which the Vatican had kept for a long time. Academy Award winner Russell Crowe played the role of Amorth and was joined by Alex Essoe, Daniel Zovatto, Peter DeSouza-Feighoney, Franco Nero, and Laurel Marsden.
Aside from Netflix, the film is also available on Apple TV and Prime Video.
Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile
Based on Elizabeth Kloepfer's book The Phantom Prince: My Life With Ted Bundy, the movie features the life story of the infamous serial killer Ted Bundy.
In the biopic, Zac Efron plays the role of Bundy. Lily Collins, meanwhile, portrays the character of Kloepfer, Bundy's longtime girlfriend who refused to believe in the heinous crimes of her boyfriend. The movie revolves around the crimes of Bundy and how Kloepfer supported him despite being convicted.
Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile is available on Netflix.
Pet Sematary
Based on the novel of famous American writer Stephen King's Pet Sematary, the movie is fictional, but some of the events in the story were inspired by King's personal experiences near his home.
The adaptation is about an old cemetery that has the power to revive the dead. But there's a catch: Those who got revived fundamentally changed as an evil spirit consumed them.
The film is available for viewing on Prime Video.
Things Heard & Seen
This Netflix original features the character of Catherine, played by Amanda Seyfried, who moved to a new farmhouse in New York with her husband George, played by James Norton. Their home, however, seems to have been plagued with horror.
The movie follows the novel All Things Cease to Appear written by of Elizabeth Brundage, who based it on her and her children's scary experiences in their old home in upstate New York.
The Girl Next Door
This cinematic adaptation of Jack Ketchum's The Girl Next Door in 1989 was called "unsettling, depressing, and is bound to make your skin crawl" by Cinemaholic.
The novel was based on real events that happened in 1965 when teenager Sylvia Likens was tortured and murdered by her caregiver. In the movie, they added the characters of David, Meg, and Ruth alongside other fictional characters.
The adaptation film is dedicated to Likens and is available on Prime Video.
