Ruby Ruiz wins Best Actress at the 2020 Harlem International Film Festival

Filipino actress Ruby Ruiz bagged the highly coveted Best Actress award at this year’s Harlem International Film Festival held in New York City, with James McDaniel as its jury chairman and Corey Glover, Richard Peña, and Liza Thomas on the narrative panel.

Her lead role at last year’s Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival entry Iska won her the same recognition at Cinemalaya 2019.

Directed by Theodore Boborol, the film tells the struggles and adversities of a loving grandmother (Ruiz) raising her autistic grandson on the poverty line. The cast includes Soliman Cruz, Beauty Gonzalez, RK Bagatsing, Jomari Angeles, and Jonic Magno, among others.

In a Facebook post, the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) announced the win and congratulated her for a job well done. “Ipinagmamalaki ka namin,” the organization wrote.

At the 2013 Cinemalaya, the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) alum received the Best Supporting Actress plum for her role on Ekstra with Vilma Santos as the lead star.
