Regine Velasquez on the state of her music career: 'I can no longer compete with the young ones'

"It's no longer my time."

Those were the words that Regine Velasquez said as she shared her realizations on the state of her career and how she can no longer "compete" with younger artists in the music scene.

On her TikTok account, the Asia's Songbird posted a lengthy video explaining why she thinks she's already past her prime in the music industry—something that has her fans upset.

"Don't panic, don't be upset, it's not a bad thing. I'm just being realistic because it's true." Velasquez stressed.

"It's no longer my time, that means I can no longer compete with the young ones. Come on, I'm 54 years old. I have been in the industry for almost 40 years and I have been singing all my life," she continued.

Even if she could, the veteran singer confessed that she "really doesn't want to anymore."

"Galing akong singing contest and half my career, feeling ko kailangan ko mag-compete kasi ine-establish ko yung sarili ko. I don’t wanna do that anymore. Sa ngayon, ine-enjoy ko 'yung life ko, ineenjoy ko 'yung respect na nakukuha ko from my peers," Velasquez highlighted.

"I love that I inspire other artists. Really, I consider myself as a mentor now. I love mentoring new artists, that's why pag tinatanong nila ako kung pwede ako mag-guest sa concert nila, I'm there," she added.

Velasquez believes that it would be good to share her knowledge as she didn't want her 40-year experience with singing to go to waste when she kicks the bucket.

"I also want to remind them that all of these things can be gone just like that. Especially ang fame. Mabilis lang, just like that nawawala 'yun so gusto ko sabihin sa kanila na let's be grateful for what we have," she emphasized.

Despite her mellowed views on her career as a singer, she assured her fans that she is still enjoying what she does.

"I just don’t want to fool myself na, 'Ah, nasa prime pa ako.' Ayoko 'yun because I think that would be very very painful for me and ayoko magising isang araw na ito na 'yung magiging realidad ko. Okay na 'yung aware ako where I am in the industry, I think it’s very healthy. I think it's right," Velasquez said.

"I'm still here. I'm doing a concert in February, I'm coming out with a new album. I'm still doing what I love most, which is performing, singing, and doing other things," she added.

While she underscored the importance of one's career, she also said that it's important to set it aside from time to time and enjoy life to the fullest.

"I am so thankful that I have a life, and you guys have to understand, I am a wife now and I am a mother. And that's another side of me that I am enjoying so much," she raved.

Velasquez's video came after her guesting at BINI's Grand BINIverse concert, where she sang Na Na Nananandito Lang with the group. She also attended the 2024 MYX Music Awards on Nov. 21.
