Reels are here: How to navigate Instagram's sprawling video feature
After more than a year since its August 2020 rollout, Instagram's Reels feature has finally arrived in the Philippines.
Comprised of short to medium-length videos with music, filter, and various creative options, Reels is essentially Instagram's version of TikTok, wherein people can create videos connected to their accounts.
Despite it being a familiar concept for digital natives, there's still the learning curve when it comes to new toggles in any app, especially one that's as sprawling as Reels. If you're still finding it difficult to navigate the new feature, here's a quick run-through of Instagram Reels.
How to watch Reels
First off, you can go straight to Reels by clicking on the clapper icon in the middle of your Instagram app. If you don't have that yet, consider updating the app.
From there, the short videos will appear automatically, and you can endlessly scroll through your heart's desire—or until your eyes start to hurt (friendly reminder to not to do the latter though).
You can also search for Reels via audio using Instagram's search bar. Once clicked, a number of popular songs and sounds will appear that connects to the ongoing trends.
Another option is the Explore page, which will automatically show Reels catered to your interest.
How to make Reels
To make your first entry, the option will be available on the bottom of the Instagram Story camera.
Once clicked, it will show a splash page to introduce you to the world of Reels. Once you click "accept," the layout will look much like that of making an Instagram story, but with more creative tools.
First, you can add audio. You can then adjust the length of the video from 15, 30, and 60 seconds.
Speed is also adjustable for slo-mo and sped-up videos. Finally, you can also add filters and set a timer to when you want the audio to start when you're recording.
It should also be noted that you can't take photos with the Reels toggle, only videos.
Once shared, you have the option to share the reel like a Story that lasts for only 24 hours, or like a regular post that will remain as a standard grid entry on your account.
All in all, if you're familiar with TikTok's UI, Instagram Reels will be a breeze.
