LIST: TV shows and movies to watch this August 2024

Rainy days are here again! Thankfully, there are a number of fun movies and TV shows to watch.

The Cinemalaya Film Festival is running this month and new TV series and films are also hitting streaming services for you to watch in case you're stuck at home.

Without further ado, here are our top picks for the must-watch TV shows and movies for the month of August!

It Ends With Us

Status: Showing in cinemas starting August 7

Starring: Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni and Jenny Slate 

 

Based on the popular Colleen Hoover novel, Lily (Blake Lively) tries to move on from a traumatic childhood to start anew in life. A chance encounter with a neurosurgeon sparks a connection but as time passes by, Lily starts to see some sides of him that remind her of her parents’ toxic relationship.

Project Silence

Status: Showing in cinemas starting August 7

Starring: Lee Sun Kyun, Ju Ji Hoon, Kim Hee Won, Moon Sung Geun, Ye Su Jeong, Kim Tae Woo, Park Hee Von, Park Ju Hyun, Kim Su An

Trapped on a collapsing bridge, survivors of a massive car pile-up find themselves in a fight for their lives against a mysterious creature. This sci-fi thriller from South Korea features the late Lee Sun Kyun.

Lolo and the Kid

Status: Streaming on Netflix starting on August 7

Starring: Joel Torre and Euwenn Mikael Aleta 

In the mood for a Pinoy heartwarming lolo-apo story? Lolo and the Kid is a story of a hustler and the child he took in routinely con the wealthy—but a life-changing opportunity could end their inseparable bond. Featuring award-winning actor Joel Torre and child wonder Euwenn Mikael Aleta, this movie may have you in tears!

Romance in the House

Status: Streaming on Netflix starting on August 10

Starring: Ji Hin-hee, Kim Ji-soo, Son Na-eun, Minho

What happens if, after 14 years, your husband or your father shows up and claims he is now a billionaire? Is it worth it to give love another shot with money as a bonus?

The Tyrant

Status: Streaming on Disney+ starting August 14

Starring: Kim Seon Ho

Kim Seon Ho fans rejoice! He is back with the sci-fi thriller The Tyrant. It features the race to find a bioweapon that is stolen during a secret handover between Korean and US intelligence agencies.

Un/Happy For You

Status: Showing in cinemas starting August 14

Starring: Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto

JoshLia is back in each other’s arms! Well, at least on the big screen!

One of the most-admired love teams in recent years reunites for Un/Happy for You. It explores how ex-lovers navigate feelings of anguish and deep affection with someone who once held a special place in their hearts. I dare you to invite your ex and watch this film together! Just kidding!

Perfect Family

Status: Streaming on Viu starting on August 14

Starring: Park Ju-hyun, Yoon Se-ah, Kim Byung-chul, Kim Young-dae 

 

A supposedly picture-perfect family is on the verge of falling apart after the murder of an acquaintance. Family-thriller? We’re here for it!

Love Next Door

Status: Streaming on Netflix starting August 17

Starring: Jung Hae-in and Jung So-min

Missing the childhood crush trope in romance-comedies? Jung Hae-in and Jung So-min will surely make our hearts flutter with Love Next Door!

No Gain, No Love

Status: Streaming on Prime Video starting August 26

Starring: Shin Min-a and Kim Young-dae 

It’s been a while since we last saw Shin Min-a in a series. This time, she plays Son Hae-young, a corporate girlie who claims she is married to get a promotion at work. She chooses a part-time cashier named Kim Ji-wook as her fake husband. Will this fake partnership turn into something real and genuine?

20th CINEMALAYA FILM FESTIVAL

Status: Showing starting on August 3 to 11, 2024 at selected Ayala Malls (Ayala Malls Manila Bay, Greenbelt, Trinoma, UP Town Center, and Market! Market!)

Now in its 20th year, the Cinemalaya Film Festival is a yearly reminder for us to support quality Pinoy independent films. With the theme “Loob, lalim at lakas," the festival aims to showcase projects that show Filipino values and real-life scenarios our kababayans are going through.
