Good news for fans of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo has come in time for Pride Month.

According to several entertainment outlets, Anna Kendrick will be directing Netflix's film adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid's best-selling novel. The Pitch Perfect actress made her directorial debut with the 2023 crime thriller Woman of the Hour, which she also starred in.

Kendrick takes over the helm from Leslye Headland, who was previously tapped to direct the film. In an interview with Variety in January 2025, Headland revealed that she was no longer working on the project, but remains a "huge, huge fan" of the book.

Apart from Kendrick, Liz Tigelaar is working on the film as the writer, with Francesca Sloan working on revisions. It will be produced by Lisa Chasin for 3Dot Productions and Brad Mendelsohn for Circle of Confusion. Novel writer Reid and Margaret Chernin are on board as executive producers.

Netflix first announced that it was adapting the best-selling novel in March 2022. Before that, Freeform and Fox 21 Television Studios developed a TV adaptation in 2019.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo follows a veteran, reclusive Hollywood icon who taps an unknown journalist, Monique Grant, to write her biography. In it, she reveals details about her rise to fame, her seven marriages, and her biggest secret.

There's no news yet about who will play Evelyn, but fans have pitched several actresses to step into the role, including Ana de Armas and Eiza Gonzalez.

Reid's other books have been adapted, including Daisy Jones & The Six starring Riley Keough (Mad Max: Fury Road) and Sam Claflin (Me Before You), and One True Loves with Phillipa Soo (Hamilton) and Simu Liu (Shang-Chi).
