The digitally restored and remastered version of the 1998 film Jose Rizal will have a gala screening in August as part of this year’s Cinemalaya.

According to a GMA News report, the remastered classic film will be screened on Wednesday, Aug. 7 at 4 p.m. at the Manila Metropolitan Theatre during the Cinemalaya Festival as “a tribute to Philippine cinema.” The event will be free to the public.

The film tells the story of national hero Jose Rizal, from his imprisonment at Fort Bonifacio until the day of his execution in December 1986.

The film starred Cesar Montano as the titular historical figure, alongside Chin Chin Gutierrez as Josephine Bracken, and Mickey Ferriols as Leonor Rivera. Other cast members include Ronnie Lazaro, Gloria Diaz, Gardo Versoza, and Pen Medina.

It was directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya and produced by GMA Films (now GMA Pictures).

Carrying the theme of “Loob, Lalim, Lakas” in its 20th year, Cinemalaya will feature 10 short films and 10 full-length films from Aug. 2 to 11 in select cinemas at Ayala Malls Manila Bay. The lineup includes Balota by Kip Oebanda and starring Marian Rivera, Love Child by Jonathan Jurilla, and Kantil by Joshua Caesar Medroso, among others.

The festival will open with Gospel of the Beast by Sheron Dayoc and close with Bona by National Artist for Film Lino Brocka.
