'FernGully' gets live-action remake 34 years after original release
The beloved 1992 animated classic FernGully: The Last Rainforest is getting a live-action remake.
The upcoming live-action adaptation is set to be written and directed by Marielle Heller, who also helmed movies A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood and Nightbitch, per reports by international outlets Deadline and Variety.
More details, including the cast members and release date, have yet to be announced.
"Our goal isn't simply to make a new film. It's to honor a timeless classic and extend its powerful themes and musical legacy across every platform,” Jon Sheinberg said in Amazon's MGM Studios' announcement, per People.
As part of its goal to increase FernGully's reach across generations, SFO Entertainment and Machine Media Advisors are seeking partnerships in music, merchandise, books, and gaming.
This development came about 34 years after the animated film's release. The hand-drawn 1992 classic centers on Crysta, a fairy from FernGully, who accidentally shrinks a young logger named Zak and teams up with him to protect the rainforest from destruction and the evil logging and pollution spirit Hexxus.
It featured an all-star voice cast, including Robin Williams, Tim Curry, Christian Slater, and Samantha Mathis, as well as songs from Elton John and Jimmy Buffett.
Following the success of the 1992 film, a sequel, FernGully 2: The Magical Rescue, was released in 1998, with the fairy community leaving FernGully to save young animals from poachers.
