‘Coco 2’ officially in the works
The music and magic live on!
Disney and Pixar confirmed the sequel of the animated fantasy-comedy film Coco in a joint Instagram post on Friday, March 21.
The Walt Disney Company, on its website, said Disney CEO Bob Iger also confirmed the production of Coco 2 during Walt Disney’s Annual Meeting of Shareholders.
“While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart, and adventure, and we can’t wait to share more soon,” Iger said.
The sequel would reunite the team behind the original film, including director Lee Unkrich, co-director Adrian Molina, and Oscar-winning producer Mark Nielsen.
Coco 2 is said to be targeting a 2029 release.
Coco follows the story of Miguel, a 12-year-old who aspires to become a musician despite his family’s long-standing music prohibition. He journeys to the Land of the Dead to uncover the truth behind his family’s musical past.
The film has won a Golden Globe and BAFTA for Best Animated Film, and two Oscars for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for Remember Me.
Coco marked a significant milestone for Pixar, introducing their first lead character from a minority group and showcasing a nearly all-Latino cast in a large-scale American production.
