Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo dazzle as witches in first trailer of 'Wicked'

It's Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo like you've never seen them before!

After two decades as one of the most beloved and enduring musicals on the stage, Wicked is inching closer to the big screen as Universal Pictures has debuted its first trailer during the Super Bowl.

The teaser begins with a magical vibe as a glimpse of the highly prestigious school Shiz University is shown before cutting to the fateful meeting of Glinda (Ariana) and Elphaba (Cynthia), who will soon become known as the Good Witch of the South and the Wicked Witch of the West respectively.

More fantastical elements are shown that may be familiar to fans of the classic Wizard of Oz story, such as the winged monkeys as well as the majestic Emerald City where the famous wizard lives. It also teases the appearance of Dorothy Gale and her companions the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion, and the Tin Man.

Based on the stage musical of the same name by Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz, Wicked delves into the untold story of the witches of Oz.

It centers on Elphaba, a young woman misunderstood because of her unusual green skin who has yet to discover her true power, and Glinda, a popular young woman gilded by privilege and ambition who has yet to discover her true heart.

After meeting as students in the fantastical Land of Oz, they unexpectedly form a close bond. However, their friendship is tested after an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz himself, and their lives take very different paths.

Joining Ariana and Cynthia in the cast are Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University’s regal headmistress Madame Morrible, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, a roguish and carefree prince, Ethan Slater as Boq, an altruistic Munchkin student, and Jeff Goldblum as the legendary Wizard of Oz.

Helmed by Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu, Wicked: Part One opens in cinemas on Nov. 27, while Wicked: Part Two is scheduled to arrive in theaters in 2025.
