'Death of the Pastor's Wife': Where is John Paul Miller now?
Netflix's new true crime documentary Death of the Pastor's Wife, currently No. 1 on the streaming platform, puts the spotlight on pastor John Paul “JP” Miller and his wife Mica Miller. The latter was found dead just two days after serving him with divorce papers, leaving behind so many unanswered questions.
Mica's siblings and friends were interviewed in the three-part Netflix offering about the circumstances surrounding her death. JP did not participate in the documentary.
According to the docuseries, Mica's family started attending the now-closed Solid Rock Church when she was 13 years old, where JP was serving as its pastor.
Mica tied the knot with her first husband in 2012 at age 18, and had JP officiate their wedding. Three years later, Mica and JP started having an affair, which Mica confessed to her brother Nate Francis, while JP admitted their relationship to his fellow pastor. They later left their respective marriages and got married on Nov. 17, 2017, when Mica was 23 and JP was 38.
The people who were interviewed for the Netflix docu claimed that JP became controlling during their marriage. Mica was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and spent some time at a psychiatric facility for treatment. Her siblings recalled that JP connected Mica's mental health issues to anesthesia following her breast augmentation, though Nate noted that Mica had not experienced psychiatric problems before she wed JP.
Mica's sister Sierra recalled calling the cops in November 2022 after Mica said she was receiving threatening messages from JP. No charges were filed at the time.
The documentary then detailed other abuse allegations against JP, including how he supposedly monitored her activities, took intimate photos and videos of them, and threatened to make them public. Mica filed for divorce in October 2023, but it was dismissed a few months later in February 2024 following their reconciliation.
Mica subsequently filed for separation from JP on April 15, 2024. JP's "abusive behavior" allegedly continued, with Mica reporting incidents involving slashed tires and razor blades. Nate also claimed he found tracking devices on Mica's car, which pushed her to move homes frequently. According to her sister, Mica had been collecting evidence for their divorce proceedings and had repeatedly expressed fears that JP would kill her and make it look like suicide.
JP was served with divorce papers on April 25, 2024.
Mica was discovered lifeless at a state park in North Carolina two days later, on April 27, 2024. Authorities said she called 911 and asked them to determine where she was from the location of her phone. "I’m about to kill myself and I just want my family to know where to find me," Mica was reportedly heard saying in the call.
Authorities ruled her death a suicide caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Sierra legally requested to be appointed as special administrator. She pointed out in an affidavit, “Mica stated to me on many occasions ‘If I end up with a bullet in my head, it was not by me, it was JP.’”
JP denied abusing or being involved in Mica's death. In a statement shared by his legal counsel in 2024, he said his then-wife “struggled with mental illness, specifically bipolar disorder, which, when not properly managed, led to paranoid episodes and self-destructive behavior.” He also noted that at the time of her death, he was in Charleston, South Carolina, which authorities also confirmed.
While he wasn't charged with any connection to Mica's death, he was slapped with separate federal charges for cyberstalking and making false statements to investigators. He pleaded not guilty to both charges and repeatedly denied the claims.
His trial is scheduled for October 2026. For now, according to Netflix, he remains free on a $100,000 unsecured bond. Authorities also ordered him to surrender his passport and wear an ankle monitor while the case is still ongoing.
JP has also since found love in a woman named Suzie Skinner, with whom he tied the knot on June 1, 2025.
The streaming platform noted he has "largely moved on" from the case and "continues to preach to a congregation of some 15 to 20 people gathering in pop-up locations around Myrtle Beach."
Death of the Pastor's Wife started streaming on Netflix on Aug. 26.
