Netflix picks up 'Sesame Street' after Max deal ends

Netflix is now the new home of the beloved children's program Sesame Street.

In a press release, the streaming giant announced the deal and said the show's 56th season can be streamed later this year, alongside 90 hours of its previous episodes.

"Now Elmo, Cookie Monster, Abby Cadabby, and all their friends are coming to Netflix later this year, with Sesame Street’s all-new, reimagined 56th season — plus 90 hours of previous episodes—available to audiences worldwide," it said.

The iconic educational series, known for its colorful cast of characters and impactful life lessons, will soon be available to a whole new generation of viewers through the popular streaming platform, featuring "fresh format changes and the return of fan-favorite segments," including  Elmo’s World and Cookie Monster’s Foodie Truck.

"Expect new ways to play along as Cookie Monster opens his very own Cookie Cart on Sesame Street, and explore Abby’s Fairy Garden, a home to surprising and delightful magical creatures."

Moreover, each episode, with Sal Perez and Kay Wilson Stallings serving as executive producers, will showcase one 11-minute story to allow "more character-driven humor and heart" plot.

The announcement came after Warner Bros. Discovery in 2024 opted not to renew its deal for new episodes of the long-time children's show "to focus on adult and family content."

Sesame Street's library, however, will still be available on Max through 2027, a Sesame Workshop spokesperson said in December 2024. On the other hand, Season 55 of the children's program will be the last to stream through the platform.

Sesame Street is a children's show that features animation, live actors, and puppets, or muppets, designed by Jim Henson. The characters teach preschool subjects with comedy, cartoons, games, and songs.

In 2023, the show introduced a Filipino puppet called TJ.
