‘Scream’ dethrones ‘Spider-Man’ with $35M North America box office debut
Scream, the fifth movie in the long-running horror franchise, dominated the box office in North America over the weekend, earning $30.6 million.
Ghostface managed to dethrone Spider-Man: No Way Home from its four-week domestic weekend box office winning streak.
The revival of the classic horror franchise from Paramount and Spyglass Media marks the first new chapter in the Scream series in over a decade. It shares a title with the 1996 original and brings legacy stars Neve Campbell (Sidney Prescott), Courteney Cox (Gale Weathers) and David Arquette (Dewey Riley) who are once again haunted by a serial killer in a Ghostface mask.
Set 25 years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past.
The film also stars newcomers Melissa Barrera, Kyle Gallner, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Dylan Minnette, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Marley Shelton, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Sonia Ammar.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the sequel was projected to earn $35 million over the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, making the film a success, considering that Scream only cost $25 million to produce.
The high interest for the slasher flick represents some positive news for the battered cinema industry, considering that Scream’s success comes amid a spike in COVID-19 internationally with the omicron variant.
Scream managed to gross $18 million from 50 markets, with the UK leading with $3.4 million.
Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home slipped to second place, taking in $20.8 million ($26 million for the four-day weekend) as its month-long box office reign came to an end. It has now earned Sony $704 million domestically and $926 million internationally.
