'Shrek 5' with the OG cast to hit theaters in July 2026

DreamWorks Animation announced that Shrekis hitting theaters in July 2026 with some of the original cast members returning, namely Mike Myers as the titular ogre, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona.

A short teaser was shared on social media platforms of a number five with horns akin to Shrek peeking out.

"The All-Star returns," the clip said along with the film's premiere date, July 1, 2026.

The fifth movie was announced to be in the works in April 2023 by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri. Eddie Murphy also told Collider that he had begun recording for Shrek 5 and that Donkey will have his own spinoff flick.

The first Shrek movie came out in 2001 and received an Oscar for Best Animated Feature in the next year. The successful franchise would spawn three sequels including Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third (2007), and Shrek Forever After (2010).

Afterward, Puss in Boots spinoffs were released in 2011 and 2022 starring Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek.

The franchise follows Shrek, an ogre who lives in a faraway swamp whose solitude suddenly gets disrupted as fairytale creatures invade his home. To regain his peace, he makes a deal with Lord Farquaad, who sets him on a path to rescue Princess Fiona. Shrek and Fiona form a bond as they travel back to Duloc, with the princess' dark secret coming to light.
