For many Filipinos, Manila Sound never really disappeared.

Its songs continue to surface at family gatherings, karaoke sessions, and celebrations, decades after the genre first dominated local radio. The infectious melodies of Manila, Annie Batungbakal,” and Bongga Ka Day remain instantly recognizable, even among younger listeners who never experienced the disco era firsthand.

Manila Sound emerged during the 1970s as a fresh alternative to the Western music that largely dominated Philippine airwaves. While traditional Filipino songs represented an older generation, Manila Sound spoke directly to young urban Filipinos. It was playful, contemporary, and deeply rooted in local culture.

At the heart of the movement was Hotdog, the band widely credited with popularizing the genre. Led by brothers Dennis and Rene Garcia, the group revolutionized Filipino pop by embracing Taglish lyrics and stories drawn from everyday city life.

Their songs painted vivid portraits of Manila and its colorful characters, making listeners feel seen in a way foreign music rarely could. The result was a cultural phenomenon that transformed the local music industry and paved the way for the rise of OPM.

Nearly five decades later, those songs are getting a new spotlight.

Bongga Ka, ’Day!: The Annie Batungbakal Musical transforms Hotdog’s iconic music into a full theatrical experience. Set in the colorful world of 1970s Manila, the production promises to capture the energy, humor, and heart that made Manila Sound resonate across generations.

The production was originally slated to run in June 2020 but was put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Produced by Newport World Resorts in partnership with VIVA Communications and The Philippine STAR, the original musical opens in September 2026 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater.
