The making of the Barbie movie was first reported in 2014, with Sony as the distributor and Amy Schumer supposedly starring as Barbie. The latter, however, had to drop the project due to "scheduling conflicts."

In 2018, it was reported that Mattel has a studio partner and that Margot Robbie will play the titular role. The movie further gained buzz last year after Robbie and Gosling were spotted filming around Venice Beach.
