Influencer reveals making 300,000 yuan a day lying in her bed 'doing nothing'
A Chinese influencer said she makes around 300,000 yuan a day by lying in her bed "doing nothing."
The South China Morning Post reported that the social media personality, known by her online alias Gu Xixi, recently revealed her earnings during a livestream.
Between Feb. 8 and 16, Gu said her sales on one major live-streaming platform amounted to 10.39 million yuan (PhP83 million), with an estimated commission of 2.79 million yuan (PhP22.2 million) earned.
In another livestreaming platform, she shared that her sales amounted to 8.94 million yuan (PhP71.4 million) over the past seven days.
“Today, I spent the entire day lying in bed, did nothing, and still made 1.16 million yuan in sales on my Douyin shop, with an estimated commission of 303,200 yuan,” she said.
“The more you cannot stand seeing me doing well, and the more you criticize me, the more I make. It is not about earning hundreds of thousands of yuan per month, it is about earning hundreds of thousands of yuan per day! Understand?”
Gu sparked criticisms after making such remarks, prompting her to change her words.
In a Feb. 17 livestream, she noted all of her earnings were “hard-earned money," and that her previous remark was intended to provoke haters.
“Do you know why I do not frequently share my sales performance now? Every time I do, there is a problem, right? It causes trouble, right? This time, it makes the headlines, right? That is why influencers like to act like they are poor,” she said. “We did not steal, we did not rob. All the money we make is hard-earned. When I said I did nothing all day, it was meant to provoke people. Do you think I can really do nothing all day? I said it just to irritate those haters.”
But this still didn't sit well with a few users.
“It is heartbreaking for a master’s student to watch, and a PhD student to cry. She has redefined what ‘hard-earned money’ really means," one user said.
“Please ban her account, so she does not have to ‘work so hard!’” another user said.
Born in 1998 in Nantong in the Jiangsu province of southeastern China, Gu is a controversial online personality who became (in)famous by performing bizarre stunts like swallowing a ping pong ball. Her account also got suspended several times for "vulgar content," including insulting people and livestreaming herself washing her buttocks.
In a livestream, she claimed being sentenced to two and a half years probation when she was 15 due to a public fight. Then, she said she was not concerned about how it would affect her children’s future.
