The beloved trio of 3 Idiots is heading back to the big screen.

Director Rajkumar Hirani confirmed that a sequel to the 2009 Bollywood hit is currently being written, with the original cast expected to return.

Speaking to Indian outlet Asian News International, Hirani said the script is now being developed.

“The story is being written. We’re still working on it. Once it reaches the right point, we’ll talk about it. For now, we’re still writing. The casting will be the same,” he said, as translated from Hindi to English by the Times of India.

Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi are reprising their respective roles as Rancho, Farhan, and Raju.

The follow-up won't return to the characters’ college days, per Hirani. It will jump two decades later, focusing on what happened to the characters after their student years.

According to Esquire India, the potential sequel follows a similar creative process to Lage Raho Munna Bhai, which also grew out of a separate story before Hirani and his team decided it could work with the existing characters.

“I didn’t even think of the story I’m writing now as a sequel. We were writing another story, and then we felt that what we had written could fit as the second part," Hirani said.

The original 3 Idiots, released in 2009, follows three engineering students as they navigate friendship, academic pressure, and their ambitions while challenging the education system’s focus on conventional success.
