LOOK: Google Maps is getting a 3D view for 'immersive' navigation

Google Maps is getting a big upgrade.

In a March 12 blog post, Google shared the updates it will roll out to its navigation app, including "Immersive Navigation," which provides a 3D view reflecting critical road details like lanes, traffic lights, and crosswalks.

"We're giving the driving experience in Maps its biggest update in over a decade with Immersive Navigation—a complete transformation of the navigation experience, with redesigned visuals and more intuitive guidance," Miriam Daniel, Vice President and General Manager of Google Maps, said.

She added that the update uses Gemini models to analyze real-world imagery from Street View and aerial photos to provide the 3D view.

This coming update is more than a visual upgrade, according to Google, as it can help you see more of your route to help you prepare for moves like tricky turns and lane changes.

Moreover, the feature allows you to preview your destination with Street View even before you head out. This will come in handy if you're going to a new place for the first time. Google Maps will also share recommendations for where you can park.

Apart from Immersive Navigation, Google introduced "Ask Maps," which uses Gemini to work as a chatbot within the navigation app. You can ask for things like "Is there a tennis court near me?" and it will give a recommendation based on reviews and a customized map. It also provides information on booking reservations.

Google said that Immersive Navigation is rolling out first in the US, while Ask Maps is available in the US and India. There's no news yet about when it will be available in the Philippines.

Apart from Maps, Google is also baking in Gemini into Google Docs.
