'KPop Demon Hunters' sequel officially in the works
It's official: A sequel to Kpop Demon Hunters is coming soon!
Netflix announced that the beloved animated film is in the works, with Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans set to return to write and direct.
“I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters. There’s so much more to this world we have built and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning,” Kang said in a statement.
For his part, Appelhans said, “These characters are like family to us, their world has become our second home. We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them and watch them evolve and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation, and story can come together.”
Months ago, international outlets, including Bloomberg, reported that the animated film would get a sequel that is slated for release in 2029. Sony and Netflix declined to comment on the report at the time.
KPop Demon Hunters tells the story of a K-pop girl group Huntr/x composed of Rumi, Zoey, and Mira, who are secretly on a mission to save the world from evil forces. They went up against Saja Boys, a boy group made of demons.
It became the most-watched original title in Netflix history. It has achieved over 330 million cumulative views just within three months of its release.
In late 2025, TIME Magazine hailed it as the "Breakthrough of the Year," noting that no animated film has seeped into popular culture this deeply since Frozen captivated viewers back in 2013.
"KPop Demon Hunters’ influence will likely be felt in the broader entertainment industry as well. In a risk-averse Hollywood, like begets like—one big-budget female-oriented action movie that rules the box office proves it’s safe to bet on another. In this case, that is good news for everything from original animation, at least on streaming, to first-time directors like [Maggie] Kang," TIME said.
The film has also been recognized by different bodies, including bagging the Music Visionary of the Year award at the 2025 MAMA, and earned three Grammy nominations, including Song of the Year, and another three Golden Globe nominations.
