Drag artists Maxie Andreison and Viñas Deluxe will alternately play the role of Trisha Echevarria in the upcoming Die Beautiful: The Musical.
The IdeaFirst Company revealed the lead stars of the musical in an Instagram video on Monday, June 15.
Director Tuxqs Rutaquio talked about the casting decision in a press release sent to PhilSTAR L!fe.
"We are thrilled to have Maxie and Viñas alternately play Trisha Echevarria. The role has become iconic, celebrated for its humor, heart, vulnerability, and unapologetic authenticity," he said.
Filmmaker and Die Beautiful movie director Jun Robles Lana added that bringing Trisha to life on stage "requires a rare kind of magic," which Maxie and Viñas have.
"Watching them bring their own flavor, humor, and fierce heart to a character so personal to me is thrilling," he said. "I can't wait for audiences to see how they elevate Trisha's story into something fresh yet wonderfully familiar."
According to the press release, Die Beautiful: The Musical reimagines the 2016 film "as a live theatrical experience, blending music, spectacle, humor, and heart while staying true to the spirit of the original story about beauty, identity, friendship, and chosen family."
In the film version of Die Beautiful, Trisha was portrayed by Paolo Ballesteros. His performance earned him Best Actor awards at the 29th Tokyo International Film Festival and the 42nd Metro Manila Film Festival.
Maxie is the winner of Drag Race Philippines Season 3. Viñas, meanwhile, is a Drag Race Philippines Season 1 alumna who also starred in its spinoff Slaysian Royale.
Die Beautiful: The Musical is set to premiere in June 2027 at the Proscenium Theater in Rockwell, Makati. Other details have yet to be revealed.
