WATCH: Steven Spielberg’s ‘West Side Story’ drops official trailer
Steven Spielberg’s film adaptation of West Side Story has dropped its official trailer, bringing together the best of Broadway and Hollywood.
The trailer for the remake released Wednesday, Sept. 15, looks as stunning as the original 1957 Oscar-winning musical of the same name by Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim.
Just over two-minutes long, the trailer outlines the classic tale of forbidden love between Tony (Ansel Elgort) and Maria (Rachel Zegler) and the fierce gang rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks.
The reimagining of the musical also stars Ariana DeBose (Anita), David Alvarez (Bernardo), Mike Faist (Riff), Josh Andrés Rivera (Chino), Ana Isabelle (Rosalía), Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank) and Brian d’Arcy James (Officer Krupke).
Rita Moreno, who won an Oscar for her performance in the original film, also appears in the remake as Valentina, who owns the corner store in which Tony works.
The movie, which wrapped filming in October 2019, is director Steven Spielberg’s first-ever musical. The film has been awaiting release after being delayed a few times due to the pandemic.
Tony Kushner penned the screenplay with Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger and Kevin McCollum producing.

From 20th Century Studios, The Walt Disney Company will release West Side Story in US theaters on Dec. 10, 2021.
