The lawyer of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s daughter Shiloh explained why the latter decided to officially drop “Pitt” from her last name.

According to a report by PEOPLE Magazine, her lawyer Peter Levine said the “significant decision” was made “following painful events.”

Levine also made a clarification on Shiloh’s viral newspaper announcement in line with her petition. “Shiloh Jolie did not take out an ‘ad’ announcing any name change,” he noted. “As Shiloh’s attorney, I am required to publish a legal notice because the law in California requires that of anyone who wants to change their name.”

This comes after Shiloh became a hot topic with her announcement stating she formally requested to change her name to “Shiloh Jolie.” It was published in the Los Angeles Times newspaper.

Shiloh filed the request on May 27, when she turned 18 and became a legal adult. A source close to Brad told PEOPLE that he's "aware and upset" about his daughter's decision.

Shiloh isn't the only child of the former couple who is dropping the surname "Pitt.” Their youngest daughter Vivienne also had her name appear as "Vivienne Jolie" in the playbill for the new Broadway musical The Outsiders.

Angelina and Brad got together after co-starring in the 2005 movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Apart from Shiloh and Vivienne, they share four other children: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, and Knox.

The couple fell apart in September 2016 when Angelina accused Brad of raping her during a plane trip from France to Los Angeles and claimed that he "physically and verbally" assaulted her and their kids.

Despite being ruled legally single in 2019, the two actors' legal battle did not stop there as Brad sued Angelina for allegedly selling her portion of their shared winery, Chateau Miraval, without consulting him.
